When I look back on our nine-day LA adventure, it’s not just the packed itinerary or the pop culture checklists that stand out—it’s the moments in between. The ones that made me laugh, pause, or feel like I stepped into a movie. This wasn’t just a family vacation. It was a reminder that travel and storytelling can walk hand-in-hand… and sometimes lead you straight into a Hollywood parking lot papal announcement.

Flying into LAX on a morning flight? Go straight to Randy’s. Great cold brew, classic donuts, and the kind of LA landmark that kicks off a trip with a smile.
Disneyland & Disney California Adventure
Even though we just missed the official launch of the 70th Anniversary Celebration, the spirit of it was already alive. From strolling down Main Street to chatting with Ant-Man and Red Guardian, it was a full dose of Disney magic—with a few Easter eggs for this fans.
FanFest at Universal Studios
FanFest was the ultimate fandom mash-up. Star Trek, Wicked, Dungeons & Dragons, Back to the Future—it was a night of joyful nerdiness capped by dancing at the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance (yes, really).
Trip Superlatives:
I’ve started documenting trips through fun awards in my journal, and this one earned some memorable wins:
- Most “Wait, What?!” Moment: Watching a new pope be announced in a Hollywood parking lot.
- Most “Stepped Into a Movie” Moment: Visiting Toretto’s Market from Fast & Furious.
- Biggest Creative Spark: Griffith Park Carousel—the very spot that inspired Walt Disney’s dream.
- Purest Fangirl Moment: Standing in front of Abbott Elementary at Warner Bros.
- Best Unexpected Delight: Watching Thunderbolts at El Capitan surrounded by high school students whose reactions made the movie even better.
This trip brought me back to the why behind all of this—to travel, to write, to find stories tucked into bookshops, movie sets, and theme parks. LA reminded me that pop culture isn’t just entertainment—it’s connection. And sometimes, a donut, a costume display, or a quick glance at a familiar facade can bring all the magic rushing back.
