What do you get when you mix a photography museum, a historic mansion, and a lemon meringue pie obsession? A surprisingly delightful day at the George Eastman Museum.
Yes—that Eastman. As in Eastman Kodak. I expected a quick museum visit with some old cameras. What I got instead was a layered and inspiring look at a man who helped everyday people tell their stories through photos.

My Favorite Discovery – The Coquette Camera Set
In a gallery filled with cameras from every era, one stood out: the Coquette—a 1930s Art Deco–style camera that came with a matching lipstick and powder compact.
It looked more like a movie prop than a piece of photography equipment. But what really stuck with me? Kodak was clearly marketing photography to women way back then. Stylish, clever, and a tiny slice of media history? Yes, please.
Best Backstory – The Lemon Meringue Pie
Early in the museum visit, we watched a short film that casually mentioned George Eastman’s obsession with the perfect lemon meringue pie. Quirky detail, right?
Then we walked into the dining room and there it was—a full pie on the table, like dessert was just served. That little touch made the whole story come alive. It’s the kind of detail I love: personal, specific, and oddly endearing.
Something I Almost Missed – Camp Cuisine
Tucked into a hallway was a small display case I nearly walked past. Inside? George Eastman’s enamel camping dishes and a handwritten journal titled Camp Cuisine.
Turns out, he loved camping and documented all his meals cooked over a fire. It was such a quiet, charming insight into a totally different side of him—and I’m so glad I didn’t miss it.
If These Walls Could Talk – The Music Room
This room gave me chills. Desks lined the walls, but near the window sat a full string quartet setup—music stands, instruments, the works.
Did Eastman host concerts here? Was it a business space and a creative one? The room didn’t say much, but it didn’t have to. The vibe was mysterious and cinematic—like stories were just waiting to be uncovered.
Strangest Discovery – The Hoof Ashtray
Okay, this one wins weirdest object of the day: a hoof ashtray. Yes, a real hoof. As in animal’s hoof.
Eastman was a big game hunter, so it tracks—but still, I did a double take. It was unsettling, fascinating, and oddly memorable. I love that the museum didn’t sanitize the past—it showed the whole picture, even the strange bits.
