When most people think of Washington, DC, they picture politics, museums, and cherry blossoms. But if you’re a movie fan? You might just picture superheroes scaling the Washington Monument, dramatic speeches on the steps of the Capitol, or an eerie tumble down the Exorcist Steps.
On a recent episode of Pop Culture Passport, I took a cinematic tour through the National Mall and beyond, highlighting some of the most iconic movie moments filmed at real DC landmarks. Here’s a peek at what made the cut—and what to look for next time you visit.
Lincoln Memorial
One of the most emotional scenes in Forrest Gump takes place here, when Forrest reunites with Jenny during a massive protest rally. You’ll also recognize it from The Day the Earth Stood Still, X-Men: First Class, and introspective scenes in The West Wing. It’s more than just a monument—it’s a mood.
Location: 2 Lincoln Memorial Cir NW, Washington, DC
Washington Monument
Peter Parker scales this towering obelisk in Spider-Man: Homecoming, but it also shows up in National Treasure: Book of Secrets, Scandal, and yes—Forrest Gump again. You really can’t film a DC movie without it.
Location: 2 15th St NW, Washington, DC
U.S. Capitol Building
From the hopeful filibuster in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington to the explosive chaos of Independence Day, the Capitol is the ultimate symbol—and set piece. It also appears in The American President and many political dramas.
Location: First St SE, Washington, DC
The White House
Whether it’s being blown up in Independence Day, under siege in White House Down, or humanized in The American President and The West Wing, this building has serious star power.
Location: 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, DC
Jefferson Memorial
This quieter spot shows up in National Treasure: Book of Secrets, Watchmen, and Deep Impact, often lending a somber or mysterious tone to the scene.
Location: 16 E Basin Dr SW, Washington, DC
The Pentagon
Okay, not technically a monument you can tour like the others, but still iconic. It’s a key location in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Mission: Impossible – Fallout, and Wonder Woman 1984.
Location: The Pentagon, Arlington, VA
The National Mall
You’ve seen it in Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Forrest Gump. Whether it’s hosting a superhero jog or an emotional protest scene, it’s a favorite location for filmmakers—and for good reason.
Location: Constitution Ave NW & 7th St NW, Washington, DC
Vietnam Veterans Memorial
This powerful site appears in Born on the Fourth of July and Forrest Gump. There’s nothing flashy—just genuine emotion.
Location: 5 Henry Bacon Dr. NW, Washington, DC
The Exorcist Steps
These steep stairs in Georgetown became famous in the chilling finale of The Exorcist. Today, there’s even a plaque commemorating their place in horror history.
Location: 3600 Prospect St NW (corner of 36th & Prospect), Washington, DC
Whether you’re a history buff, a film nerd, or a little bit of both, Washington, DC offers more than meets the eye. Next time you visit, don’t just take selfies—channel your inner movie character and walk in their footsteps.
